![]() ![]() If my Discus broke tomorrow, I would buy another one, even at full price. You will get faster results with a K10a, you will get marginally more accurate results with a better spectro than with an i1pro2, but if you only calibrate for yourself and time isn't literally money, then I find the i1pro2 + Discus a hard to beat combo. It's clearly not as good or fast as a Klein K10A, but it's built like a tank, it has glass filters so it doesn't drift, it has a LED to aim at the screen, it has a relatively narrow FOV, and if you have a semi pro reference meter it's a fantastic combo for an enthusiast and even a professional. I used to long for a Klein 10A, but since I have got my Discus (second hand for £300, so a real steal), I never looked back. ![]() It reads up to 2500nits, which means it's fit for HDR with most displays (and definitely projectors) for a long time. Even after 120mn, it doesn't drift much anyway, so I wouldn't worry about that. If you're not reading black, the Discus only needs a dark calibration every 120 minutes or so, so enough to run a 5000 points LUT, at least in Lightspace. It needs to be just after a dark calibration, because after a few minutes reading dark isn't reliable anymore, but if you're careful you can use it to read your on/off contrast and reference black for a BT1886 gamma calibration, which is impossible with the i1d3/C6 with a JVC, at least facing the screen. Regarding low light sensibility, the Discus is not meant to do that but I can reliably read black with it, and that's on my JVC RS500 with the iris fully closed, even with the DI on. ![]() It's not as accurate as a proper profile, but these new LCOS tables are much better than any of the default tables, at least here. I have provided some tables made from my JVC (rs500) in both SDR, HDR, rec-709, BT2020 and 3D, and they have been integrated by BasiCColor in the new f/w that you can download from their website. I train the Discus to my i1pro2, as my unit wasn't super accurate initially (mine was second hand, they are supposed to be quite accurate otherwise). I tried the i1d3 at the time but it wasn't able to read low light satisfactorily (tried two different units with Calman and Chromapure at the time, both were really poor in low light), so I sold it and replaced it with a Discus. I'm a long-term, very happy user of the Discus ![]() I'm more inclined that OEM products for their biggest OEM customs have been specially selected, than "random" OEM models are)Įveryone else who are not competitors are of course free to speculate. (C6 are not binned, but the 2017 OEM i1d3 is, where's the logic in that. And even then, only when it suits their cause. I'm also saying it's inappropriate that Ted and LI always chime in to "educate" people with (potentially fake) "facts", since they are either competitors or affiliated with a competitor. It's not impossible that the C6 have been specially selected or have a (even if only slightly) custom firmware. What I'm basically saying is that it "seems" the low-light readings of the C6 are very consistent, and similar to other peoples experiences and a couple of reviews as well. I haven't felt the need to compare i1d3 (or other OEMs) to the C6, although I have a NEC branded i1d3 (rev B) and have access to a retail unit (Rev B) as well. I'm saying I've had excellent low-light results. It seems very few are interested in sharing and discussing their results.Ĭlick to expand.I'm NOT saying the C6 is signifcantly better than the i1d3. Something I'm finding sadly lacking is being able to find other people's calibration / LUT results to be able to compare the kind of performance I'm achieving with my setup and knowing if I'm doing as well as can be expected or whether the gear I've got has a lot left to give and I need to improve technique etc. If you have compared them, which rev / variant i1d3 have you compared to? What isn't clear in your post (and I don't know you, or your calibration credentials, so please don't take this as a slight in any way - it is just a question for clarification) is whether you're saying that you've had excellent low light results on the C6 meter (significantly better than i1d3s you've used) or you are just offering an opinion that the C6s you've seen have what you see as excellent low light performance and you don't have a basis for comparison to the stock i1d3 units? So I could believe other differences between meters or binning going on. I've had 2 OEM i1d3 A's and 2 Retail B's - and there are significant differences in the low light behaviour between the OEM A and the Retail B for like for like meter modes it seems. ![]()
